Key Features for Running Sunglasses
Whether you are looking for your first pair of sunglasses, or are replacing your well-loved shades, running-specific prescription eyewear can enhance and improve your time on the road. While we can’t guarantee that the right eyewear will make you faster, it just might just give you a little edge over your friends that don’t take their equipment as seriously as you do.
Instead of attempting to make do with non-functional (yet very stylish) fashion sunglasses, or squinting through runs in your regular, everyday glasses, step into the world of performance prescription sunglasses. Here are a few things to consider about frame style and design before making your purchase.
As a runner, protecting your eyes and ensuring you have the proper vision in all scenarios may just help you hit that new PR you’ve been working towards. Regardless of where you run, it’s important to choose a style with lenses that “wrap” around your face. A wrapped lens design offers protection from debris, wind, and bugs, and minimizes the amount of light that sneaks through the top, bottom, or sides of your glasses, which can be quite distracting.
Shatterproof lenses are also a necessity. Shards of glass (even tempered glass isn’t shatterproof) are bad news in a fall for very obvious reasons. We recommend high-grade Polycarbonate or Trivex lens materials for running as both are lightweight with great optical clarity, and are also totally shatterproof. These lens materials are used by all of the top sport-specific eyewear brands.
Frame Fit and Design
As tempting as it may be to rock your favorite lifestyle shades for your next race, your shades likely won’t perform as you want them to when you need them most. The main difference between running-specific glasses and casual frames is a good, athletic frame fit.
Your new running sunglasses need to provide all day comfort. A large part of comfort when running comes from not having to keep readjusting your glasses when you sweat, or every time your feet hit the pavement. For this reason, running-specific shades will have rubberized nose pads and temple arms to keep your glasses secured in the same position as when you first put them on. This will make a huge difference when it comes to your sanity, not having to push your glasses up the bridge of your nose every 5 strides.
In a pair of casual or lifestyle sunglasses, sweat tends to pool in the inside corners of the lens and leak into the eyes at the most inopportune moments. A semi-rimless or vented full-rim frame will work wonders for keeping dripping and fogging to a minimum. The design of the frame and the way it handles sweat will make your time on the road spent focused more on the journey ahead, rather than wasting time stopping to defog your glasses every 50 feet.
