Serengeti Prescription Frame and Lens Technology

The Serengeti brand was created by Corning Incorporated as a budget-conscious low-end brand and was on the brink of collapsing by 1985.  With a complete overhaul of the brand image, product line, and customer support Serengeti managed to turn the brand into one of the most well-known and trusted brands in high-end designer eyewear. Serengeti was acquired by Bushnell Corporation, who also owns Bolle amongst a handful of other large brands, in 2000. 

Since the brands turnaround Serengeti’s main focus has been eye protection and creating the best lens technology available.  The brands dedication to its lens technology has led to some of the most cutting edge advancements in the optical industry.  Due to its innovative spirit Serengeti has become most well-known for their Photochromic lenses along with their classic and contemporary silhouettes. 

Below is an overview of Serengeti’s Prescription Sunglass lens and frame technology as well as an overview of the brands prescription lens tints and recommended uses for each.

Understanding Serengeti Prescription Frame Technology:

Serengeti Signature Hinge:   Serengeti’s Signature Hinges are made of copper beryllium and engineered with stainless steel and Torx screws that are exceptionally strong and secure.  The process that Serengeti uses for their Signature Hinge features lost-wax casting, which is one of the oldest and most intricate methods of craftsmanship that is used in the making of fine jewelry and art.

Serengeti Premium Spring Hinge:  Serengeti’s spring hinges are designed to allow the temples of the sunglasses to gently hug the face for a completely custom fit.   Serengeti’s Internal Spring Hinges are carefully concealed inside the temple while the Mono Block Spring Hinges are created from a single component in order to eliminate soldering of parts and creating a stronger, more durable hinge.

Serengeti Wire-Flex:  Serengeti’s Wire-Flex is made of a combination of nickel, silver and stainless steel making it both flexible and strong.  The Wire-Flex hinge was designed to provide a truly customized fit as the Wire-Flex bends to the contours of the face.  Wire-Flex hinges are found in Serengeti’s Flex Series sunglass frames.

Serengeti S-Flex: Serengeti’s S-Flex temple design can be found throughout the brands Flex Series sunglasses.  The “S” shape of the temple provides a snug fit with unmatched comfort.  The S-Flex design is created from a mix of monel and beta titanium which creates an ultra-lightweight and durable frame.

Adjustable, Optical Nose Pads and Temple Tips: Serengeti’s metal frames feature adjustable nose pads and temple tips to allow a completely customized fit.  The Megol nose pads can be adjusted to comfortably fit any nose bridge no matter how large or small.  The temple tips can be adjusted for a customized, snug fit behind the ears.  Both the nose pad and temple tips were designed to absorb moisture to further prevent the frames from slipping and keep them securely in place.

Serengeti Nylon Frames: Serengeti’s nylon frames are exceptionally lightweight, resistant to chemicals and both flexible and comfortable.  Serengeti uses the highest quality of injected nylon to create fashionable frames with superior durability.

Serengeti Acetate Frames: Serengeti uses a Cellulose Acetate, which is made from cotton and is an all-natural, lightweight frame material that can be made into radiant hues and bold patters.  Serengeti’s Acetate frame also offer a customized fit as they are pliable when heated.

Serengeti Titanium Frames: Serengeti’s Beta Titanium is lightweight, strong, flexible and an ideal frame material as it expands the fit range of the sunglass by offering a secure, customized fit.

Serengeti Memory Metal Frames: Serengeti’s Memory Metal prescription sunglass frames can return to their original shape after being bent or twisted.  The Memory Metal sunglass frames are made from hypoallergenic titanium allow that is 25% lighter than standard alloys and are both lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

Understanding Serengeti Prescription Lens Technology:

Serengeti Rx Vario Drive Thin Design:  Serengeti uses the most cutting edge advancements in the optical industry to create an ultra-lightweight lens that combines a polarized filter and photochromic technology to create unsurpassed visual acuity in a customized lens.  These lenses are also going to be 72% thinner and 45% lighter than traditional prescription lenses.  Serengeti’s Vario Drive Thin Design lenses also allow the largest power range in high wrap sunglasses available.  Serengeti’s prescription lenses are available in 99% of prescription with a total power range of +6.00 to -8.00, available in both single vision and progressive.

Serengeti Mineral Prescription Lenses: Serengeti’s Mineral lenses are glass lenses that are 20% thinner and lighter than a standard glass lens.  Serengeti uses borosilicate optical glass that can withstand extreme temperature changes and chemically tempers the lenses to ensure that they are both scratch and impact resistant.  The lenses then undergo the brands Hydrogen Firing Process, which gives the lens Serengeti’s photochromic and Spectral Control technology. 

Serengeti PHD Trivex Prescription Lenses: Serengeti’s PHD Trivex lenses are built with NXT technology and made from Trivex which is 75% lighter than glass and 10% lighter than polycarbonate.  Unlike glass, Trivex lenses will not shatter and have a high impact resistance similar to polycarbonate.  This make Trivex lenses ideal for sports and an active lifestyle.

Serengeti Drives Photochromic Prescription Lenses (available in mineral (glass), gradient mineral(glass), and trivex)Serengeti’s prescription Drivers lens is an amber colored lens that amplifies contrast and definition so you see vibrant colors in all environments, these features make this lens particularly well suited for driving. The photochromic technology automatically lightens and darkens the shade depending on UV rays to provide the perfect light transmission no matter what condition you encounter.  The Drivers lens is also engineered to transmit more red, yellow, and green colors in order to make it easier to identify stoplights.  Serengeti’s prescription Drivers lens tint also relaxes the eye muscles which reduces stress and fatigue while driving.  Unlike most photochromic lenses Serengeti's Drivers lenses will transition while in the car and are not dependent on UV rays to self adjust their tint.

Serengeti Drivers Gold Photochromic Prescription Lenses (available in trivex):  Serengeti’s prescription Drivers Gold lenses provide the same benefits as the brands signature Drivers lens with the addition of a gold-flash mirror coating that further reflects visible and infrared waves that can be damaging to the eye.  Mirror coatings also help to increase contrast and definition.

Serengeti Sedona Photochromic Prescription Lenses (available in mineral (glass), and trivex): Serengeti’s prescription Sedona lenses are photochromic so the lens tint will self-adjust to changing light conditions.  The Sedona lens is a rose lens that is ideal for sports and an active lifestyle where a high contrast lens provides greater definition between objects and improves depth perception.  Typically rose base lenses are recommended for sports such as golf, fishing, and mountain biking as rose based lenses maximize an objects definition.

Serengeti 555nm Photochromic Prescription Lenses (available in mineral (glass), and trivex): Serengeti’s prescription 555nm lenses are photochromic so the lens tint will self-adjust to changing light conditions.  The 555nm lens is a grey lens that manages yellow and green light transmission to cool and relax the eye.  The light silver mirror coating further reduces strain on the eye by acting as a protective shield against glare.

Serengeti Grey Photochromic ‘CPG’ Prescription Lenses (available in trivex):  Serengeti’s prescription Grey Photochromic ‘CPG’ prescription lenses are a cool photochromic grey lens that was designed to perform in all weather conditions.  Grey based lenses are typically best suited to handle harsh glare, reducing strain on the eye and allowing the eyes to relax.   Grey base lenses let you see true color as it is rather than a high contrast lens that amplifies color.

Understanding Serengeti Prescription Lens Tints:

Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ Mineral Prescription Lens (available in polarized and non-polarized, 9-24% visible light transmission, high contrast, bright to medium light conditions): Serengeti’s Mineral lenses are glass lenses that are 20% thinner and lighter than a standard glass lens.  Serengeti uses borosilicate optical glass that can withstand extreme temperature changes and chemically tempers the lenses to ensure that they are both scratch and impact resistant.  The lenses then undergo the brands Hydrogen Firing Process, which gives the lens Serengeti’s photochromic and Spectral Control technology.  The Amber lens enhances colors and contrast while automatically lightening and darkening according to changing light conditions.  Amber lenses also reduce stress and fatigue on the eye.

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ Mineral prescription lenses are going to be ideal for driving as they increase contrast and reduce stress and fatigue on the eye.  Since this is a glass lens and can shatter we do not recommend this lens for any sports.  Glass lenses are more scratch resistant than a polycarbonate lens but unlike a polycarbonate lens they can shatter.

Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ Gradient Mineral Prescription Lens (11-16% visible light transmission, high contrast, bright to medium light conditions): Similar to the Serengeti Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ Mineral prescription lens the gradient will have the same driving benefits of the amber lens.  The Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ Gradient Mineral prescription lenses will glass lens that has a gradient tint, meaning the tint will be darker at the top of the lens and fade to a lighter tint as you get closer to the bottom of the lens.  This lens will also differ from the non-gradient Amber Photochromic ‘Driver’ Mineral lens in that it has a smaller photochromic light transmission range of 11-16% rather than 9-24%.  Essentially this lens will not be as dark in its darkest state or a light in its lightest state as the non-gradient lens.  The Amber lens enhances colors and contrast while automatically lightening and darkening according to changing light conditions.  Amber lenses also reduce stress and fatigue on the eye.

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ Gradient Mineral prescription lenses are going to be ideal for a fashion sunglass, everyday use, and driving as they increase contrast and reduce stress and fatigue on the eye.  Since this is a glass lens and can shatter we do not recommend this lens for any sports.  Glass lenses are more scratch resistant than a polycarbonate lens but unlike a polycarbonate lens they can shatter.

Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ PHD Trivex Prescription Lens (available in polarized and non-polarized, 11-16% visible light transmission, high contrast, bright to medium light conditions): Serengeti’s PHD Trivex lenses are built with NXT technology and made from Trivex which is 75% lighter than glass and 10% lighter than polycarbonate.  Unlike glass, Trivex lenses will not shatter and have a high impact resistance similar to polycarbonate.  This make Trivex lenses ideal for sports and an active lifestyle. The same as the Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ Mineral prescription lens, this lens enhances colors and contrast while automatically lightening and darkening according to changing light conditions.  Amber lenses also reduce stress and fatigue on the eye.

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Amber Photochromic ‘Drivers’ PHD Trivex prescription lenses are going to be ideal for driving as they increase contrast and reduce stress and fatigue on the eye.  Since this is a Trivex lens and will not shatter this lens can be used for sports and would be recommended for sports such as golf, fishing, or any activity that benefits from a high contrast lens that increases depth perception and definition between objects. 

Gold Mirror Photochromic Polarized ‘Drivers’ PHD Trivex Prescription Lens (9-21% visible light transmission, high contrast, bright to medium light conditions):   Serengeti’s Gold Mirror Photochromic ‘Drivers’ PHD Trivex prescription lens is particularly well suited for driving because it enhances colors and contrast, lightening and darkening for optimal light transmission in any condition. It also has stylish golf-flash mirror that reflects visible and infrared wavelengths which can be damaging to the eye.

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Gold Photochromic Polarized ‘Drivers’ PHD Trivex prescription lenses are going to be ideal for driving as they increase contrast and reduce stress and fatigue on the eye.  Since this is a Trivex lens and will not shatter this lens can be used for sports and would be recommended for sports such as golf, fishing, or any activity that benefits from a high contrast lens that increases depth perception and definition between objects. 

Rose Photochromic ‘Sedona’ Mineral Prescription Lens (available in polarized and non-polarized, 10-22% visible light transmission, high contrast, intense to sunny light conditions):  Serengeti’s Rose Photochromic ‘Sedona’ Mineral prescription lens is a high contrast lens that is ideal for harsh light conditions as it increases depth perception and definition between objects.  Since this is one of Serengeti’s Mineral lenses it is glass so it is not recommended for sport use as the lens can shatter on impact.

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Rose Photochromic ‘Sedona’ Mineral prescription lenses are going to be ideal for a fashion sunglass, everyday use, and providing a remarkable high contrast view in the harshest of light conditions. Since this is a glass lens and can shatter we do not recommend this lens for any sports.  Glass lenses are more scratch resistant than a polycarbonate lens but unlike a polycarbonate lens they can shatter.

Rose Photochromic ‘Sedona’ PHD Trivex Prescription Lens (available in polarized and non-polarized, 10-22% visible light transmission, high contrast, intense to medium light conditions):  Serengeti’s Rose Photochromic ‘Sedona’ Mineral prescription lens is a high contrast lens that is ideal for harsh light conditions as it increases depth perception and definition between objects.  Serengeti’s PHD Trivex lenses are built with NXT technology and made from Trivex which is 75% lighter than glass and 10% lighter than polycarbonate.  Unlike glass, Trivex lenses will not shatter and have a high impact resistance similar to polycarbonate.  This make Trivex lenses ideal for sports and an active lifestyle.

Recommended Use:   Serengeti’s Rose Photochromic ‘Sedona’ Trivex prescription lenses are an ideal lens option for skiing, golfing, and any marine sports as they provide a high contrast view in the harshest of light conditions.

Silver Mirror Photochromic ‘555nm’ Mineral Prescription Lens (available in polarized and non-polarized, 9-15% visible light transmission, medium contrast, intense to sunny light conditions):  Serengeti’s Silver Mirror Photochromic ‘555nm’ Mineral prescription lens is a grey based lens with a silver mirror coating.  Mirror coatings on lenses help to increase contrast and definition.  As grey based lenses are not high contrast lenses they let the eye see true color as it is while cutting harsh sun and allowing the eye to relax, reducing any strain. 

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Silver Mirror Photochromic ‘555nm’ Mineral prescription lenses are going to be ideal for a fashion sunglass, everyday use, and casual marine use. Since this is a glass lens and can shatter we do not recommend this lens for any sports.  Glass lenses are more scratch resistant than a polycarbonate lens but unlike a polycarbonate lens they do have the ability to shatter.

Silver Mirror Photochromic ‘555nm’ PHD Trivex Prescription Lens (available in polarized and non-polarized, 9-20% visible light transmission, medium contrast, intense to medium light conditions):  Serengeti’s Silver Mirror Photochromic ‘555nm’ PHD Trivex prescription lens is a grey based lens with a silver mirror coating.  Mirror coatings on lenses help to increase contrast and definition.  As grey based lenses are not high contrast lenses they let the eye see true color as it is while cutting harsh sun and allowing the eye to relax, reducing any strain. 

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Silver Mirror Photochromic ‘555nm’ PHD Trivex prescription lenses are going to be ideal for a fashion sunglass, everyday use, marine and open water fishing. The grey base lens will allow the eye to relax in the harshest of sunlight conditions making this lens a great option for all day wear and extreme sunlight conditions such as deep sea fishing. 

Grey Photochromic Polarized ‘CPG’ PHD Trivex Prescription Lens (9-21% visible light transmission, medium contrast, intense sun to medium light conditions):   Serengeti’s Grey Photochromic ‘CPG’ PHD Trivex prescription lenses have all the same benefits of the 555nm lens without the silver mirror coating.

Recommended Use: Serengeti’s Grey Photochromic Polarized ‘CPG’ PHD Trivex prescription lenses are going to be ideal for everyday use, marine and open water fishing.  Lens with a grey base will allow the eye to relax as they cut out harsh glare making grey lenses ideal for activates such as sailing or open water fishing when you’re in intense sunlight for extended periods of time.
